Description
The MultiScan MS 20 is the measuring device for the automatic optical stability and aging analysis of liquid dispersions, in particular suspensions and emulsions, and the comprehensive characterisation of time- and temperature-dependent destabilisation mechanisms. It consists of a base unit and up to six connected ScanTowers with temperature-controlled sample chambers.
The base unit of the MS 20 features an integrated touch screen that displays status information and can be used to control important base functions. Additionally it is possible to register the studied samples, fast and conveniently, with the built-in or optional handheld barcode scanner.
The ScanTowers of the MS 20 can be individually controlled and operated at different temperatures. Electric heating, with liquid counter cooling, allows for measurements in a temperature range of -10 °C to 80 °C.
Main features
- docking ports for six scan towers
- built-in barcode scanner for an easy and specific sample registration and documentation
- integrated touch screen for basic operation and control of all connected scan towers
- measurements at temperatures ranging from -10 °C to 80 °C (temperatures below 4 °C require an optional thermal insulation sleeve)
Software
The intuitive MSC control and evaluation software supports you in the use of the MS 20.

Accessories
Due to the modular product design the MS 20 can be combined with a multitude of accessories.

MS – Accessories
The MS 20 can be adapted to different measuring scenarios and samples using accessories. Using different sample containers liquid dispersions can be analysed inside the temperature controlled ScanTowers and for a regular calibration special reference bodies are available.
ScanTower ST-TEC
The MS 20 uses up to six independent ScanTowers for the measuring process. Hence, samples can be individually analysed at different temperatures and with different measuring parameters.
The temperature inside the ScanTower ST-TEC is controlled using an electric resistance heater and a liquid counter-cooling. This allows for measurements in a temperature range of -10 °C to 80 °C. Temperatures below 4 °C require an optional thermal insulation sleeve.
Due to the possibility of using several ScanTowers on one MS 20, samples can be analysed in short- and long-term experiments side by side. For example, one ScanTower can be used to analyse a sample for months while using another ScanTower with daily changing samples.
Sample containers
In order to place sample dispersions into the ScanTowers of the MS 20 various different sample containers are available:
SC 20
Standard sample containers with special screw cap for easy insertion into a ScanTower.
- Outer diameter: 27.5 mm
- Inner diameter: 25 mm
- Scanned volume: 27 ml
SC 20D
Disposable standard sample containers with normal screw cap.
- Outer diameter: 27.5 mm
- Inner diameter: 25 mm
- Scanned volume: 27 ml
SC 20 with various sealing discs
SC 10
Fire-polished round glass cuvette with flat bottom and corresponding plug. For use in combination with Adapt-SC 10.
- Outer diameter: 10 mm
- Inner diameter: 8 mm
- Scanned volume: 2.8 ml
SC 10D
Glass test tubes with round bottom and corresponding plugs. For use in combination with Adapt-SC 10.
- Outer diameter: 9.7 mm
- Inner diameter: 7.9 mm
- Scanned volume: 2.7 ml
SC 15
Sample containers with dimensions fulfilling the specifications in ASTM Standard Test Method D7061 for testing the stability reserve of heavy fuel oils. For use in combination with Adapt-SC 15.
- Outer diameter: 16 mm
- Inner diameter: 12 mm
- Scanned volume: 6 ml
Adapters for sample containers
The Adapt-SC 10 allows the placement of the smaller sample containers SC 10 and SC 10D into a ScanTower. The Adapt-SC 15 allows the placement of the special sample container SC 15 into a ScanTower.
Reference Body Set
The Reference Body Set RBS is used to calibrate the backscattering signal of the ScanTowers. The set consists of three Zenith Polymer® Diffuse Reflectance Standards:
- Diffuse Reflectance Standard 20% backscattering
- Diffuse Reflectance Standard 50% backscattering
- Diffuse Reflectance Standard 99% backscattering
External barcode scanner
The base unit of the MS 20 features an integrated barcode scanner for sample recognition. Optionally, the handheld barcode scanner BCS-EXT can be used. Hence, barcode labels created with the MSC control and evaluation software can be read even more flexible and conveniently. The handheld barcode scanner requires a free USB port on the PC with the MSC software.
